孝宗淳熙间曾游临安。光宗时尚未仕宦。有《书舟词》。存词150余首。杨慎《词品》称程垓为"东坡之中表也"。但程垓成年时,东坡卒已久,其误甚明。毛晋《书舟词跋》及《四库全书总目》亦沿杨慎之误。近人况周颐《蕙风词话》卷四考辨甚详。
程垓词今存157首。其词作反映生活面较窄,多写羁旅行役、离愁别绪,情意凄婉。如〔满庭芳〕"问故乡何日,重见吾庐";〔酷相思〕"月挂霜林寒欲坠"。不过他的长调很工丽潇洒,如〔摸鱼儿〕"掩凄凉黄昏庭院"。在临安所写的〔凤栖梧〕"蜀客望乡归不去","忧国丹心曾独许",表现了作者的忧国之情与乡思,语浅情深。其词风深受柳永词的影响,所以冯煦《蒿庵论词》称其词"凄婉绵丽,与草窗(周密)所录《绝妙好词》家法相近"。程垓的词在风格情调上,都与柳永词有近似的地方,所以有人将他的词看作是柳词的余绪(薛砺若《宋词通论》)。但柳词虽有“森秀幽畅”的长处,也有“俚艳近俗”的短处。程垓词却能扬其长而避其短,潇洒脱俗,挚婉蕴藉,深为后人所称赏。
